How Does Contamination affect plants?

i live near the creek which gets its water from the under ground source that the Black Mesa coal mine gets water from. recently we have been doing a science experiment where we give a few different plants that all have different water sources. one of our plants has started to die and i was wondering if it has to do with the water which is the creek water i was talking about in the begining.
