Times Square, NY or Shibuya, Tokyo? Which was first?

I'm not sure which was first. But I was just in NYC last month, and I was also just in Shibuya Tokyo this month (last week), and I was far more impressed with Tokyo. It seemed more "futuristic" to me, but maybe that was just because I was more out of my element there (I'm Canadian, so American culture isn't anything new)
