How do type O blood people fight off diseases if they don't have antigens?

I'm an O+, universal donor. How come we're able to fight off infections and diseases if we don't have the antigens to inform our body of diseases? Then, type AB blood has antigens but doesn't have antibodies...We learned this in Physio today, but I'm confused.
